Traveling to the Mexican Caribbean
You may have concerns about recent negative media reports mentioning Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean. Here at Royal Resorts, we want you to feel safe and confident about your upcoming trip and we hope that this update answers any questions that you might have about the area.
On Thursday, November 4, a violent incident involving organized crime occurred on the beach in front of a resort in Petempich Bay near Puerto Morelos in the Riviera Maya. Royal Resorts does not have much information about what happened, but it appears that guests at the hotel in question were moved off the beach and pool deck for a time until the authorities had control of the area. None of the resort staff or guests were harmed.
A number of international media outlets carried the story, picking up on the name of the resort and erroneously referring to Cancun, using a photo of the Hotel Zone. The incident occurred miles from Cancun.
The Mexican Caribbean is one of the world’s most popular travel destinations and the authorities work closely to ensure the safety of visitors and residents. Security has been upgraded in recent years with the implementation of additional security cameras and monitoring systems, extra police for the cities of Cancun and Playa del Carmen and increased coordination between municipal, state, federal police, the national guard and the military.
Royal Resorts has the security and comfort of its guests as its top priority. Security guards patrol the resorts and the beaches 24 hours a day. There are closed circuit cameras in public areas and other key locations. There are also check points at the entrance of the resorts to monitor and control vehicles entering the premises.
Our advice is to continue with your vacation plans. It is safe to travel to Cancun, the Riviera Maya, and the Yucatan Peninsula.
