A warning about using UBER in Quintana Roo
Royal Resorts Management would like to share this important information about UBER with you.
If you are thinking about using UBER in Cancun, Playa del Carmen or elsewhere in the state of Quintana Roo during your vacation please be aware that official authorization by the state authorities is still in process. The State Government Transport and Highway department has not recognized UBER as an authorized means of public transport although a recent court ruling defined it as a means of private transport. As a result, the authorities may pull over and tow UBER vehicles because the drivers do not have the official legal documents required to offer transport services.
The Taxi Unions in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and other towns in the state are opposed to UBER as a perceived threat to the livelihood of their members. There have been incidents of altercations with UBER drivers, protests and roadblocks, causing traffic disruption for all.
Please be aware that if you choose to use UBER for any transportation, you run the risk of delays or of being left stranded and not being able to arrive at your destination.
In order to avoid the inconvenience and vacation disruption that this would entail, we recommend the use of authorized services listed at the Thomas More Travel desk in your resort or the public transport system if you are planning to move around within the city limits.
If the State Government changes its position on UBER, we will publish an update in Members News.
