As part of the preparations for the summer season and the seaweed landings that occur from time to time along the Mexican Caribbean coast, a floating barrier will be placed in the bay in front of The Royal Haciendas to deflect approaching patches of sargassum carried by ocean currents. Installation will begin on April 1 and will take about three days (weather permitting).
The barrier will stretch across the bay from Secrets Moxché in the north to Punta Esmeralda in the south and is 150 meters from the shoreline. It will be anchored to the seabed but allows for the free movement of fish, sea turtles and other marine creatures. There will be a controlled access point for Dive Balam boats entering and leaving the bay.
The company installing the barrier will coordinate with The Royal Haciendas and with other participating resorts to remove the seaweed that may come ashore on small stretches of beach in the north and south of the bay that are not covered by the barrier. It will monitor prevailing winds constantly to adjust the position of the barrier if necessary and it can be dismantled if a hurricane threatens the area.
