Taxi union protest against new Quintana Roo transport law may cause traffic disruption
We would like to share some important information with our guests about possible traffic disruption as a result of a transport dispute affecting Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos and other parts of the state of Quintana Roo.
The State Congress has approved a new Transport Law (Ley de Movilidad) to regulate public transport, improving the service for passengers and also reinforcing the rights of pedestrians with regard to traffic and safety. Although the law will not enter into effect for 90 days, the taxi unions in different parts of the state have already rejected clauses that affect their members such as the authorization of concessions, competition and the eradication of monopolies, the entrance of new companies such as UBER and the roadworthiness of vehicles. The union leaders have called on their members to take industrial action against the new legislation by joining demonstrations and strikes.
Please be aware that there may be limited taxi service at times and slow moving traffic as a result of these demonstrations.
If you have a flight to catch, it is a good idea to check your departure time at the travel desk or with your transport company. You may have to leave your resort earlier than planned.
The authorities are doing everything they can to ensure that traffic disruption is kept to a minimum.
We will post additional updates as further information becomes available.
