Highway improvement projects are underway in Cancun

Four major highway improvement projects are underway in Cancun. A traffic interchange is being built in the vicinity of the airport; Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard is being repaved and widened; a bridge over Nichupte Lagoon will link the city and the Hotel Zone and eliminate the bottleneck in the Punta Cancun area and a new access road connecting Huayacan Avenue and Boulevard Colosio will provide an alternative access route for Cancun residents.

Work will continue in stages until October 2023, the estimated time of completion given by the Ministry of Communication and Transport. When these projects are finished, they will improve accessibility and traffic circulation in the area, however in the meantime, some traffic disruption and delays are expected.

What are the projects?

  • Modernization of the airport access road with the addition of a traffic interchange and the widening of Highway 307 that links Cancun and the Riviera Maya in the vicinity of the airport
  • Complete resurfacing and improvement of Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard, the highway leading into Cancun (13.36 kilometers), including two new bridges for pedestrians and installation of traffic lights.
  • Nichupte Bridge, a bridge spanning the lagoon, 8.8 kilometers from the traffic interchange at the entrance to Downtown Cancun to km 13 of Boulevard Kukukcan.
  • Avenida Chac Mool, a new access road connecting Avenida Huayacan with Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard, 4.4 kilometers.

Possible traffic disruption and delays

The authorities are doing everything possible to keep disruption to a minimum by planning the work in stages for the four projects and opening alternative routes from Avenida Huayacan for access to Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard. However, traffic is slower to and from the airport and entering the Cancun Hotel Zone and in the Riviera Maya, especially at peak times during the day. We ask you to bear this in mind as it is affecting travel times to and from the resorts and the airport transportation services offered by Thomas More Travel.

Arriving at the airport

Upon arrival at the airport, you may have to wait for a few minutes for your Thomas More Travel van to pick you up. If this is the case, please be patient, your driver will soon be with you.

Your return trip to the airport

The return journey from your resort to the airport may also take longer than usual, an extra 30 minutes for Cancun resorts and up to 90 minutes for Riviera Maya destinations such as Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen. On the day that you are due to go home, the recommendation is to leave your resort earlier to ensure that you get to the airport in good time for your flight. If you have booked your round-trip airport transportation service with Thomas More Travel, visit the tour desk in the resort lobby the day after you arrive to schedule the day and time for your return journey to the airport.
